The critics that are always directed to women who are for feminism is whether the term “feminist” might be overused as a shield for certain problems, or are women really going through pertinent issues that require us to voice out our opinions and to continue with the feminist movement…
The answers to these questions can only be found by gaining a sense of understanding Understanding the definition of the term. Understanding the power this term has. Understanding the struggle that the everyday woman comes across in order to perceive why women’s rights seek to be emphasized: FEMINISM is a range of movements and ideologies that share a common goal, to define, establish and achieve equal political, economic, cultural, personal and social rights for women.
Gender Equality is the main point. Having equal opportunities, equality in the workplace, within relationships in our societies…the everyday fight of falling victim due to our vulnerability, causing us to be seen as objects, the disrespect women encounter when merely walking past or doing mere activities, accompanied by disturbing comments. Locking away clothes which might be deemed as 'inappropriate' to be worn by a female, to worst-case scenarios such as women not having a right to complain when they are being sexually harassed because you “called for it”. This is the constant struggle that we want to get rid of, and it is not only starting now. The feminist movement dates back to the 1960’s and 70’s as well, and we still have a long way to go.
As important as feminist history is, it is quite vital to focus on the modern day activities as well. Situations and issues we can relate to, namely, the rise of popular culture, which is one of the most important points due to the controversies that usually revolve around it. Some women are of the belief that the rise of this culture has encouraged women to turn away from what has always been deemed as the 'appropriate way' of acting and dressing as a woman, as well as the entire approach of gender roles in society. While another section of women are of the belief that popular culture has positively impacted and highlighted the plight of feminism, and has made it  ok for women to do whatever they believe is right for their own bodies, as well as the increase of equality within societal spaces such as the media industry, politics, sport and business.
However, whichever way we might choose to approach this topic and express our views as different as they may be, the most important thing to remember is learning to love ourselves as a gender before we invite opinions or analysis from the world. Before we cry out “feminism” and “equality of the sexes”, it is vital to continue practicing equality, self-love and affirmation within our sisterhood.
